What pre-teen girl has not ever dreamed of being a superstar rock singer? What teenager has not imagined themselves the center of attention of their peers? Well, it seems 15 year old Miley Cyrus lives the dream both in her real life as well as her stage life. An instant success in her role as Hannah Montana, Miley has shot to the top of the charts of both the song world as well as proving to be a popular young actress among her peers.
The daughter of popular country singer, Billy Ray Cyrus, Miley has carved out her own niche in the entertainment world. She writes nearly all her own songs and has a decidedly sassy rock style as Hannah Montana that appeals to her peers.
Her acting career began at age 9. At age 12, Miley auditioned with Disney for the part of Hannah Montana, but Disney put the project on hold, thinking she was much too small. But she persistently kept after Disney until March 2006, when at age 13, she officially stepped into the role of Hannah Montana. The Disney Channel show of the same name has since turned out to be a phenomenal success.
In “Hannah Montana,” Miley Cyrus plays a teenage rock star named Hannah Montana who really desires to have the best of both worlds, so she dresses down and plays Miley Stewart by day so she can be a “normal” high school student.
The charm of that very idea has so captured her fans that Disney has been able to market merchandise such as Hannah Montana CDs and videos, Hannah Montana wigs, Hannah Montana clothing, and of course the Hannah Montana line of fashion dolls!
The very idea of the Prince and the Pauper type story has always appealed to young and old alike. The success of Hannah Montana seems to hinge on this very idea - that each of us hides a secret alter ego bursting to make a show of itself.
This theme is carried through into Miley Cyrus/Hannah Montana: Best of Both Worlds concerts, where Miley sings her own brand of rock and then switches into character to play Hannah Montana on stage.
These dual role concerts sold out every time and tickets were often scalped at thousands of dollars. The concert was filmed at several locations and then made into a theatrical film version that was debuted in February 2007. It was filmed and viewed in 3D.
Of course there is the inevitable movie version of the TV show, “Hannah Montana: The Movie” due to hit the box offices in April of 2009. Will there be a fourth season of Hannah Montana? Miley has said she is committed to her role as Hannah for the obvious reason that she has a contract with Disney.
But her own career as a pop/rock singer is taking off and just may surpass her acting role. It remains to be seen what will win out. For now, Hannah Montana holds the rapt attention of 6 to 11 year old girls and as far as they are concerned - Hannah Montana rocks!
